Ever wondered what goes into planning the perfect photoshoot? Let's discuss what goes into conceptualizing a photoshoot, from brainstorming creative ideas to bringing them to life. It doesn’t matter if you're a photographer or just curious about the magic behind the scenes, this guide has got you covered and will help you regardless of if you are in front of or behind the camera.

1. Brainstorming Creative Ideas

Every great photoshoot starts with an idea. This is where creativity truly shines. Begin by considering the purpose of the shoot: is it for a brand, a personal project, or an artistic endeavor? Once you have the purpose, let your imagination run wild! Think about themes, moods, and stories you want to tell through your images. Inspiration can come from anywhere—nature, fashion magazines, art, or even everyday life.

As a brand photographer, the most helpful part of my process for knowing where to start is with my complimentary photo consultations. This is where I meet with the client before my contract is even signed so we can discuss their vision and personal brand style. This is important not only for my creative process, but so the client can decide if my photographic style and the way I think and create meshes with their brand voice.

2. Choosing the Right Props

Props are the elements that add depth and context to your photos. They can be anything from a vintage suitcase to wildflowers. When selecting props, think about how they will complement your theme and enhance the narrative. Sometimes, the simplest props can make the most significant impact.

3. Finding the Perfect Locations

The location of your photoshoot is crucial in bringing your vision to life. In Alberta, we are blessed with a wide variety of settings to choose from including urban settings, beaches, forests, or studios. Regardless of what you choose, the location should provide a suitable backdrop for your story that matches the theme of the shoot. Scout different locations and consider factors such as lighting, accessibility, and permissions.

Something I recommend when you are not photographing is starting a list in your mapping app of locations you would like to photograph at. This way, should you ever need to brainstorm locations, you have a pool of locations prepped and ready to pull from.

4. Collaborating with Models and Team Members

A successful photoshoot often involves a team of talented individuals, including models, makeup artists, stylists, and assistants. Communicate your vision clearly to everyone involved. Ensure they understand the theme and mood you want to achieve. Make to-do lists and provide samples of your inspiration when able, even if it’s just a Pinterest board. Be open to suggestions from your team. They are fellow professionals and want to see your photo day be a success.

5. Planning the Details

Create a shot list to ensure you capture all the essential images you need. You’ll need a shoot schedule, including times for setup, breaks, and wrap-up. Be prepared for unexpected challenges and have a backup plan in case things don't go as expected.

As a side piece of advice, the number one thing I notice people don’t plan for is weather and hunger. I have an emergency pack filled with food, first aid supplies, water, sunscreen, and an umbrella just in case. I cannot count how many times I have had to use these items even after prompting my team to bring these items. If you want to be the favorite person at the photoshoot, have these items.

6. Bringing the Vision to Life

On the day of the shoot, bring all your planning and preparation together. Ensure everyone is on the same page and ready to create magic. Pay attention to lighting, angles, and composition to capture the best possible images. Have fun and let your creativity flow—this is where the magic happens!
